GABION BASKETS
Please call for prices
Gabions are used in many situations including the stabilization of earth movement and erosion, river control, reservoirs, canal refurbishment, landscaping and retaining walls. They can be manufactured in welded mesh or woven wire. Welded mesh gabions are faster to erect and do not need tensioning. This allows them to keep their shape, to be free from bulges and depressions and fit easily against the wall. It is possible to cut holes in them if needed to pass pipes etc through and they can be machine filled.
We also sell to the public for bespoke or small projects. |

Gabions are customisable and we can fabricate curves for home garden use. The picture to the left of this is a great example of our gabions displayed at the Chelsea Flower Show. As you can see the gabions can be planted in to soften edges. If used for a seating areas slabs can be cut and placed on top of the wall to make a striking feature. When used for a landscaping purpose their versatility is limited only by imagination. For example wine bottles have been used as an infill, or a recent trend is to half fill with stones and half fill with timber logs. FMM can insert a partition at the front of the gabions in order that expensive stone can be used at the front whilst the rest of the gabion can be filled with lower quality aggregate. We also can offer bespoke gabions for specific designs from curves to steps. |
An example of a domestic project is shown below. In this case over a weekend a family dramatically improved their back garden, clearing away an old fence and installing a smart gabion wall. Gabions are easy enough to install that no experience is necessary to get a good result. |

| Welded Mesh Gabions are manufactured from Galfan Wire or triple life coated. They have a 95% zinc 5% aluminium coating giving them up to 4 times the durability of ordinary galvanising. Woven Wire Gabions are galvanised to BS 443. Both can be supplied with a PVC coating, the wire beneath is galvanised to BS 443. The PVC on Woven Wire Gabions is non bonded and gives an average thickness of 0.55mm. The PVC on Welded Mesh Gabions is bonded giving 0.25mm thickness. Plastic coated units are most suitable for coastal projects. The Gabions comply with the Department of Transport White Book specification, as detailed in section: 6.26/4, and amended August 1994. |

Gabion boxes and Mattresses are made from 76.2mm x 76.2mm nominal (3" x 3") Welded Mesh, divided by diaphragms at 1 metre centres where necessary with wire diameters 3mm, 4mm or 5mm.
3mm diameter wire is used on lower retaining walls, 4mm diameter wire on medium to high retaining walls and the heaviest 5mm wire for the highest structures. FMM also fabricate our baskets in mixed diameter wire panels for clients where cost saving is important.

Below are the standard sizes we stock we can produce any size. It is best to keep to the sizes specified to minimise costs. If you do require a certain height try to keep to combinations of 75mm the mesh size to give full squares.

Mattresses are useful when trying to avoid erosion in streams the mattress goes into the river and underneath a gabion wall to stop the river undercutting the wall at the edge where the water speed is fastest.

Weight of Filling Materials
Stone Fill
The stone fill should be in accordance with the engineers specification and needs to be a hard and durable material. The gabion/mattress fill should be not less than 100mm and generally not greater than 150mm with 90% being retained on a 100mm diameter ring. For a more attractive finish hand packing to the face is required prior to machine filling. |
